Home > Temples of Kerala > Sabarimala Temple > Sabarimala and the Sabaripitham Sabarimala and the SabaripithamGiri and Pitha are two terms in the Tantricism. ‘Giri’ means high and ‘Pitha’ means flat or plane. In the Tantricism all the things which are high or perpendicular to the ground are considered in the purusha samkalpa and the things which are dig or plane are considered in the Prakruti Samkalpa. All the Yogasastras say that this universe is derived from the combined great powers of Purusha and Prakruti. These tatwa’s (principles) are called Siva and Sakti in Tantric texts. According to Vedanta it is Brahmam and Maya. In Puranas it is Jagadiswara and Jagadambika. We can see that there is a great reality in the history of Ayyappa. The hidden reason of creation of the universe is the extraordinary meeting of the three powers; according to the ancient texts. They are Saiva, Vaishnava and Sakta. The creation, maintenance and existence are observed by these powers. Devi or the Sakti who is in the form of nature mingles with Siva the Parabrahmam. The creation of all that in universe is happened. The Devi in the form of nature mingles with Vishnu. All the creation of the universe is protected and expanded. When Siva and Vishnu joins or merges into the within of this nature or Devi, the end or the contraction of the universe is taken place. In the history of Ayyappa, Siva and Vishnu reveals themselves and the Devi presents here as Sakti in the form of Mayamohini. The trinityh has joined here. Here the presence of Vishnu is in the form of Mohini, that means Vishnu and Mohini have mingled together. It is said briefly that the power of Siva and Sakti is only prevailed here. We have already seen that, according to the Tantricism, anything related to Purusha is high and anything related to Devi is plain. These facts are symbolic, these have been imaged on the Sabarimala. The mountain is high and that is in the form of Purusha the Sivatva, for offerings or pujas for Siva a Sivalinga is used. The mountains have the shape of linga. Therefore we may say that the Sabarimala is Sivarupa. What is the Pitha?A Pitha is a wooden stool type short equipment or such like a high place for sitting. In the process of worship of a diety consecrated in the idol has to be erected on a pitha. According to Tantricism there are three pithas. They are: 1. seat of a Tantrika (the man who does puja) Consider this pitha as Saktiswarupa and Deviswarupa. Devi is considered on the basic power centre of the universe. The basic power centre of everything is this earth. The earth is Devirupa. Anything to be placed must have a foundation and these kind of foundations are called Pithas. The area where the pujas or offerings in respect of Ayyappa is done on the top of the Sabarimala is considered as Sabaripitha. The power of Mayamohini is glittering as Pitharupini on the head of Siva, the Srungarupa. The head of Siva in the Sivasamkalpa, is in abundance of hair locks. The mountain and the thick forest is resembling the head of Siva. There is a phase of moon (Candrakkala) in the matted hair of Siva. The Nectar like phase of lit moon is Devirupa. It is exactly the flow of Nectar-like rays of moon of eternal calmness the Sabarigiri and the phase of moon the Sabaripitha. The idol of Ayyappa on the Sabaripitha is consecrated with his hands holding the symbol of jnanam _ jnanamudra. It has been said that the Ganges flows from the head of Siva. She is the symbol of power to destroy sins, giving virtues and most of all, the power of wisdom. Therefore, Ayyappa holding the Jnanamudra is the symbol of wisdom like the sympathetic blessings of the Ganges flowing over the place darkened with sins created in Kaliyuga. The Sabarigiri, the Sabaripitha and the idol of Ayyappa awake the sensations and experiences of the Solitary Oneness, the Brahmam which is our within and the imaginations of emancipation. (There is a Sabaripitha on the hill way in the name of Sabari, the old lady ascetic and it is not the same which is mentioned here).
