Sree Uma Maheswara Swami Temple

From the Peak of Kailasa Mountain Uma Maheswara travelled to Agastya Mountain in the North passing through dense forests, hills and streams they reached the ancient city of Kollam. After seeing the beautiful gardens palace and Royal Highways of Kollam the Lord told Devi that 'a person who visits Kollam will desert his lliam.' Seeing the beauty of the place the Devi wished to spend the night there. They decided to rest under a banyan tree which was in the middle of the town. Near the banyan tree lived Venkateswaran the royal sculptor and architect. The sculptor had a dream that a temple should be built at the spot where the Lord and Devi had taken rest. After taking permission from the king, the sculptur built a 'Peedam' and installed the idols of Uma Maheswara, made of clay on the 'Peedam' Kollam became a blessed city due to the presence of the Lord and Devi. It is a rare 'Mahakshetram' where Uma Maheshwara are seen together on the same 'Peedam'. In the Kollam city on the main road from Chinna Kada to Valiyakada little away is the Uma Malieswara Temple. The main entrance of the temple is near the Royal Highway. At the entrance there is Ganapathi, Sree Murugan and Nandikesan. The Lord's security 'Madan Thampuran' protects devotees from all dangers. In the Uma Maheswara Temple there is no caste, creed or Religious discrimination. In the past Portuguese, Parsis and Chinese used to come to the temple for the fulfIlment of various desires. The ! Lord is easily pleased. Many people have been blessed by Uma ! Maheswaran to get married and have children. Through Swayamvara Archana and Uma Maheswara pooja and Ganapathi Homam problems in the horoscope and obstacles in getting good alliance can be solved.Reconstruction of the temple which had become old and discoloured was first taken up by a Government High School teacher Saravana Perumal. The work was later carried on by his followers S.Swaminathan, S.Saravanabhavan who were in change of the Temple Administration. Now the Temple Administration is taken care of by Saravanabhavan's son Babu Swaminathan. Umamaheshwara devotee Babu Swaminathan is also the Managing Trustee of the temple. The Manager is GRadhakrishnan Nair.

Festivals - The festival is in the Malayalam month of 'Edavam' on the day of 'Punardam' and Pooyam' In this famous and ancient temple of kerala reconstruction work is in progress. They expect liberal donations, co-operation and help from the devotees during this time.
