Home > Temples of Kerala > Sree Venkataramana Temple Thayyil Kannur Sree Venkataramana Temple Thayyil Kannur Sri Venkatesh Bhat of Mangalore came to Cannanore and opened a small Bhajana cum Worship hall in the 17th century, which was earlier called Venkatesh Bhat's Mutt. Later, the Prathistha of Sri Venkataramana was performed and shrine of Goddess Mahamaya was also built and it came to be known as Sree Venkataramana Temple. Sree Venkataramana Mahamaya Temple, Kannur is a sacred temple of about 400 years old, belonging to the GS.B.Community. It has got Festivals - All auspicious days and festivals as per the holy calendar are celebrated at Sree Venkataramana Temple, Thayyil. The GSB community through the GSB Mahamaya Seva Samithi conducts every festival in keeping with the age-old traditions and the participation of all community members. The New Year Day as per the holy calendar commences with Samsarpadvo. The new year festival also takes into account our great respect for nature by conducting the Samudrapooja, where a pooja is conducted on the sea-shore near the temple to appease the sea goddess, followed by offering of coconuts to the sea to usher in prosperity to al1.This day also sees the beginning of a 45-day pooja at our temple during the Chaitra and Vaishaka months during which the idol of Lord Sree Venkataramana is brought out to the Vasantha Mantap for pooja, which takes place with the Lord being seated in the cradle. Hence the name Palla pooja for this 45-day long festival. The pooja is held to the accompaniment of Bhajans and distribution of Prasad takes place after the pooja. The main festival at the temple is Navarathri. During Navarathri devotees throng the temple from near and far to seek blessings of Goddess Mahamaya and Lord Venkataramana. The festival also attracts devotees to seek the blessings and guidance from the oracle. All from Kannur eagerly await the festival, as it becomes an annual occasion to meet relatives and friends. The festival is also famous for its bhajans as these are sung only during Navarathri and carry multilingual flavors ofKonkani, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi. The Lalitha Sahasranama Archana on the fifth day and the Maha Chandika Homa on the seventh day are witnessed and partaken by the community members in full strength. Yet another unique aspect of this festival is the drawing of the famous Deviroopa, on the ninth day, a huge portrayal of the all-powerful Goddess using age-old methods and techniques. This drawing of Goddess Durga brings out the real feeling of the Navarathri festival. The festival climaxes after the night long Mahapooja and MahabaIi on Mahanavami night. The procession carrying the divine palanquin is taken to the sea-shore for performing age-old rituals and returns to the temple amidst joyful dancing and drumbeats, concluding the nine-day celebrations. The conclusion of the nine-day Navarathri festival also coincides with the start of the 41-day long Paschimjagaran rituals, of Kankadaarthi, bhajans and poojas that are held before sunrise to awaken the Lord and have a refreshing effect on all those who at tend. The bhajans are melodic and flowingly sweep away the drumbeats of navarathri. The 41-days rituals end with Ekkatavo, which is the 24 hour non-stop recital of Bhajans of Lord Vittal and Goddess Rukmai. The Hulpo procession from neighbouring households to the temple involving little children carrying fruit trays on their heads is always a joy to watch. Never does the Taal fall silent on this day. It is bhajans, bhajans and bhajans all the way. Karthika Panchami is another major festival of the Venkataramana Temple which celebrates enthusiastically. Other Festivals at Sree Venkataramana Temple, Thayyil include Lalaki Utsav, Akshaya Thritiya, Ranga Pooja on Vinayak Chathurthi and Dasami Dindi. The important sevas (Offerings) include Udayasthamana pooja, Pushpalankara pooja, Shatha kalashabhishekam, Ganahomam etc. The temple is governed by the Board of Trustees and the chairman of the Board is V. Prakash Maller with A.Jagathish Pai and R. Sreekar Pai as other trustees. GS.B. Mahamaya Seva Samithi under which the festivals of the temple are conducted consists of 15 members with A. Panduranga Prabhu as the President, V. Ajith Maller as the Secretary and Dr. M. Padmanabha Shenoy as the treasurer.
