Home > Temples of Kerala > Thirunelli Temple Thirunelli TempleThis is an ancient temple and is a Mahaskhetra situated on the slopes of the Brahmagiri, in Tirunelli at Wayanad district, famous for performing rituals intended to give rest to the departed souls. It is 32 kilometers from Mananthavadi on the Mananthavadi - Mysore road, and has to turn left from Kattikulam. Dense forests surround the four sides of the temple. One can see wild elephants and flocks of deer on the road. The presiding deity is Mahavishnu, facing east. Poojas are performed five times abiding by ThekkenedathuTharananelloor thanthra. The priest who perfonns the temple poojas does not leave the temple premises during his tenure. Sub- deities are Ganapathi, N agam and Hanuman. On the western side of the temple there is a cave temple in which Gundiga Siva is present, and on the southern side Bhadrakali and Vettaikaren are also present. There is a two-day festival, which ends on Vishu day. There is a guideline that the temple should use only their own elephant for taking the lords in a procession. There is no well in this temple, and in olden days water was brought from Papanashini. Now water is been drawn from a pond in the Brahmagiri girl hills through a unique way of using bamboo channels, and it is one of the ancient method and technology of water supply system. This temple is known as the Thekkan Kashi (Kashi of the South) and surrounded by Kambamala, Karimala and Varadiga, the Thirunelly Temple is a marvel of traditional temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. The crystal clear waters of the Papanasini river running downhill add to the enchantment of the place.
