The legend of Kalamassery
The name Kalamassery is derived from ‘Kalabasery’. Kalabasery was the place from where Kalabam was brought to Thrikkakara Temple. Later this Kalabasery changed its name into Kalamassery.
Kalamassery is a municipality in Ernakulam district in the Indian State of Kerala. As of 2001 India Census, including cities, villages and towns (Provisional). Kalamassery had a population of 63,176. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kalamassery has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is 87% and female literacy is 82%. In Kalamassery, 10% of the population is under 6years of age. Apollo Tyres and HMT are two major factories in Kalamassery. St.Joseph School, Rajagiri School, Govt. Polytechnic, etc are the famous Educational Institutions in Kalamassery.
The soils consists mainly of recent sediments (Alluvium, Teri’s, Brown sand which had a sticky nature etc). Red coloured sticky soil also found in these areas. Climate is generally tropical, heavy rains accompanied by thunder are common from June through September. The average annual rainfall is about 350cm. the Periyar river also harbor many different types of fishes. Jackfruit, coconut, mango trees etc are mainly seen in these areas. Main mode of transportation are roadways, airport and railway.

Kalamassery is basically divided into 3 parts (Bus Stops) basically.
* South Kalamassery
Kalamassery is regarded as an Industrial hub with South Kalamassery having an Industrial development plot and so many small and big industries functioning here. It’s regarded some what polluted because of the amount of Chemical wastes that been discarded from Chemical factories in and around the Manjumal area.

It also had a B-class Movie theatre and a Railway Station. There is also a Kerala history Museum. A new railway over bridge also came up in South Kalamassery. It does also have one Town Hall owned by Kalamassery municipality.
Education And Educational Institutions
Most of the population of Kalamassery is literate. It is a centre of educational institutions. So many colleges are situated in Kalamassery, St. Paul’s College, CUSAT,Rjagiri College etc. Small descriptions about the educational institutions are given below:-
St. Paul’s College
St. Paul’s College, located in the industrial belt of Kerala, Kalamassery, functions under the management of Latin Archdiocese of Verapoly. The college named after St. Paul, the celestial patron of the Pope was founded by Dr. Joseph Attipetty, the late Arch bishop of Verapoly to commemorated the historic visit of his Holiness Pope Paul VI to India in 1964. The foundation stone of the college was blessed by his Holiness on December 3, 1964 and was solemnly laid by Dr. Samuel Mathai the Vice Chancellor of university of Kerala. The college started functioning on 13th July 1965 with two-year pre degree courses under the affiliation of Kerala University. On October 1983, Mahatma Gandhi University came into existence and St. Paul’s came under the affiliation of Mahatma Gandhi University.

Cochin University of Science and Technology
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is a university in Kochi also known as Cochin alias Ernakulam. Founded in 1971, the universityconsist of three campuses, two in Kochi and one in Kuttanad, about 66km inland. Nearly 2000 students engage yearly in various area of undergraduate and postgraduate study. Admissions are based on an All India Entrance Examination known as CAT (Common Admission Test) and is offered to students who have scored fifty percent or more in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the 10+2 level. Also various Departmental tests are conducted for the Post Graduate courses.
Originally known as university of Cochin, the university came into being in 1971 through an Act of the Legislative that was the result of a concerted campaign for quality post graduate education in the State of kerala. In keeping with the motto of the university, “Tejas vina vadhithamastu”, which conveys, “ May learning illumine us both the teacher and the taught”, the atmosphere in the campus is vibrant and intellectual.
There are two separated campuses, two in Cochin and one at Pulinkunnu, about 65km south of Cochin. The main campus is Thrikkakara – School of Engineering Campus. It is located, 1km of the National Highway 47 at South Kalamassery. About 180 acres in extent. The main campus introduced for the first time engineering degree for IT in India. The Lakeside Campus, 12 Km away from the main campus, has an idyllic setting in the heart of the city on the estuarine water front. The recently acquired Pulinkunnu campus in Kuttanad (Alleppey District) is about 65km away from the main campus. The campus is surrounded by beautiful villages, temples and Churches. Mon compu Bagavathy Temple is located close to this campus.

Government Polytechnic College
Government Polytechnic College is one of the major Polytechnic Colleges in Kerala having course of study in 7 disciplines. It started to function in the year 1951 as a technological institute and upgraded as a Polytechnic in 1958.The institution is centrally located kalamassery on the side of NH 47. The institution is spread over in an area of 59 acres where its main block, various academic blocks, laboratories and workshops are situated. At present, regular course of study is in 7 branches of engineering with an intake of 360 students per year, as per the AICTE approval F. No. 770-54005/RC/94 dated 7th June 2004. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Automobile, Computer Engineering and Electronics Production Technology are the branches in regular course of study and Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering are the branches in which part time course are being conducted.
The Rajagiri Institutions owe their origin and success to the visionary congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) an indigenous society in the ascetic tradition of Christianity known for their pioneering work in the field of education in Kerala. The CMI of Sacred Heart Province, Ernakulam established Rajagiri in 1955.

For primary education, there are many schools in Kalamassery. Most of them are English medium. Both State and CBSE Schools are there. St.Joseph School, St. Ann’s, Rajagiri, Government Higher Secondary School, V.H.S.E, FACT School etc are the Schools.
Large Scale Industry or Factories located at Kalamassery
FACT-Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore, Kalamassery.
FACT, India’s 1st large scale unit was set up in 1943 for fertilizer. In 1947, FACT Udyogamandal started production of ammonium sulphate with an installed capacity of 10,000 MT nitrogen. FACT became a Kerala State Public Sector Enterprise on 15th August 1960 and on 21st November 1962; the Government of India became a major Shareholder. The second stage of expansion of FACT was completed in 1962. The 3rd stage of expansion of FACT was completed in 1965 with setting up of a new Ammonium Sulphate plant. FACT Engineering and Design Organization was set up on 24th July 1965. FEDO has since then diversified into chemicals, petrochemicals, hydrometallurgy, pharmaceutical and other areas. FACT engineering works was established on 13th April 1966. Over the Years FEDO developed capabilities in the fabrication of pressure vessels and heat exchangers.

Small Scale Industries in Kalamassery
There are so many small scale industries in Kalamassery. A part of South Kalamassery is known as Industrial area. There are can see small scale industries like, Perfume making industry, Plastic recycling industries… So many people are engaged in works or get employment through these industries. There are also ‘kudumbasree’ associations, were most of the ladies are working. Some women’s are engaged in the cultivation of Ayurveda plantation.
Health Care Centers in Kalamassery
The major Health care centres or Hospitals or clinics in Kalamassery are Medical College, Social Clinic, Karipai Clinic, Kalamassery Aryogalayam, Kottakkal Ayurveda Shala. All medical institutions are reputed ones and the treatments are very good. Accident cases are attended mostly in medical college. There is certain allowance for the backward people in treatments. They get concessions in payments. Free medical check ups are also conducted.
Museum of Kerala History
The ‘live’ Museum is a light and sound show of three dimensional visuals. 87 figures who shaped the history and culture of Kerala in the last two thousand years have been represented here in light and sound Tableaus. The story, from the early peoples of Kerala to the modern age is interspersed with social, cultural and literary facts are a fascinating one. The museum has a collection of 150 dolls, all hand made with meticulous attention to detail and representing the wide diversity of people and customs of India. The dolls represent young men and women from Gujarat to Nagaland and from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. There are ‘Brides and Bridegrooms’ from various states, dancing figures etc. The gallery depicts mainly specimens of Indian Contemporary Art (Painting and Sculpture) over a period of the last two hundred years. The gallery also displays a mural painting based on the classical Sanskrit drama Shakuntalam executed in the traditional Kerala. Mural style by a recognized master. The Mural 25ft long 5ft wide is of the largest in Kerala and is done with meticulous attention to detail.
A brief description of the Gallery is given below:
A mural painting covering 125 sqft depicts as episode from the Sanskrit drama Shakuntalam by Kalidasa. This is executed on the inside wall Karen’s mural art has been faithfully reproduced by a master of the art.
Hall 1-Ground floor
Shows specimens of traditional Thanjavoor art works by the (“Vompanyschool”) Bengal school, Progressive Art Group, also Kishen Khanna. Examples of abstract art in this hall are the works of Ram Kumar, Ganesh Haloi, Manu Parekh, G.R. Santhosh and K.G. Subra.
Hall 2-Ground floor
Has Ganesh Pyne, Shuva Prasanna, Shyama Datta Roy, sanjay Battacharyas, Paresh Maithy and Veena Bhargava amongst others.
Hall 3-First floor
Has Sunil Das, B. Sanyal, Madhava Menon, sudher Kastgir and Bimal Das with others.
Hall 4&5 Fisrt and Second floor
Houses painting of varied styles,mostly individual styles evolved by the painters, Satyanti, Jagadish Chander, Yesudasan, Sohra Basheer are some of the artists here.
Has a slide projection studio with reproduction on slides of important works of world masters.
About fifty sculptures are distributed on various floors. Works by D.P Roy Chaudhary, Bajaj, Sarbari Chaudhary and all displayed.
St Mary's jacobite Syhrian Church
As per historical records, St. Mary Jacobite Syrian Church was constructed in 1976 September 29. In 1991 renovation was conducted for rebuilding the Church. In 1994 the renovation was over. The most important about this Church, is the Zunoro of the Holy Virgin Mary. As per historical records, St. Mary , mother of our Lord Breathed her last at the age of 51 and was laid to rest in Gethsamane Garden. Her body was lifted to heaven by the Angels on the third day. St.Thomas who arrived there late from India creed out for her blessings and proof of his participation in the burial. As a clear evidence the waist band (girdle) and the veil (Mookasheela) landed in the hands of St. Thomas. He carried it to India. Latest was taken to Uraha, then to Homs in Syria and kept very sacredly at the Altas of Zunoro Church. Latere it was discovered from the Holy Zunoro Church.
St. Pious Church
St. Pious Church is the Church of Saint Pious. Under this church, there are several institutions, which gave job opportunity to women. V-guard’s Churidar Stiching Unit is working under this church. There is also a computer centre which educate the needy and backward people. V-guards stabilizer unit also had a unit here. It also had a kinder garden and women hostel.
