My Thrikkakara, a little verdant village set on the outskirts of the metropolitan city of cochin where myth and history slumbers entwined in each others arms plays the roe of a step mother to me – a step mother in to whose bosom I can run for refuge and solace from the dust and din of the urban jungle. A sojourn into her past made me wake up to the beauty that she had hidden within. A treasure trove of folk tales, legends, myths and anecdotes unraveled itself before my eager eyes as her true story emerged from the mists of centuries of ruin and negligence. Things were put into a new perspective as the richness of her past and heritage played out itself in front of me. The legend behind Onam of Vamana asking for three feet of land and Mahabali, the righteous king fulfilling the demand and being sent to pathala on offering his head as the place to set the third foot is too famous to be quoted and at the same time too sunk into the soil of the land for generations to recount and marvel at, yes indeed, Thrikkakara is the homeland of the socio-cultural extravaganza of Onam. Even though Thrikkakara may receive a facelift and be changed to the busiest IT hub of tomorrow, centuries after it will still be quintessentially remembered for its ‘demon’ king who brimmed over with goodness and his faithful subjects who wait for him year after year…
