Meen Mapas - Fish Curry with Coconut Milk

Ingredients of Meen Mapas

Serves: 6

A Christian dish.

500 gms fish

1 ½ tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

½ tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)

1 medium-sized onions, chopped

4 green chillies, slit

12 cloves garlic, chopped

3-cm piece ginger, chopped

1 stalk curry leaves

3 petals cambodge, torn into pieces and soaked in ¾ cup water

1 tsp salt

¾ cup coconut milk(1st extract)

Mixed together:

½ tsp black pepper powder

½ tsp turmeric powder

½ tsp red chilli powder

2 tsp coriander powder

4 tbsp water

Method of Preparation of Meen Mapas

  • Clean fish, cut into 3-cm pieces and wash.
  • Heat oil in a pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds. When they start sputtering, add fenugreek, onion, green chillies, garlic, ginger, and curry leaves, and fry till onions turns translucent.
  • Mix in spice paste and fry over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Add cambodge with its soaking liquid and bring to boil.
  • Add fish and salt, mix gently and cook over low heat till fish is tender and gravy thickens.
  • Pour in coconut milk, bring to boil and remove from heat.
  • Serve with rice, puttu or pathiri.
