Pavakka Kichadi - Bittergourd Curry with Curd and Coconut

Ingredients

This is another of the ettukoottam kari.

The differences between and a kichadi are subtle in that the sequence of steps is different,and sometimes,the number of ingredients varies.

200 gms bittergourds (karela)

3 tsp oil

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp husked Bengal gram (chana dal)

1 stalk curry leaves

3 green chillies,chopped

3/4 cup curd (not sour),whisked

1 tsp salt

Ground to a fine paste:

1/2 medium-sized,fresh coconut,grated

3 green chillies,chopped

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

3/4 cup water

Method of Preparation

  • Wash bittergourds,remove seeds and chop
  • Heat oil in a pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds.When they start sputtering,add gram and fry till it turns red.Stir in curry leaves,green chillies and bittergourds,and saute till bittergourds turn brown.
  • Mix curd with salt and coconut paste,add to pan,mix well and cook for 5 minutes more.
  • Variations:Okra (bhindi),carrot,beetroot or unripe mango can be substituted for bittergourd.
